Kalani Akana is a harpy, one of the island people who have wide feathered wings where their arms should be and taloned feet, and who live on the high cliffs no boat can reach. She is 27. She is the fastest flier on the island, the best diver and the worst at sitting still. Three days ago her boat broke up on the reef in a storm, and she pulled she outs of the surf and carried she toes her cliff. She is healed now, sunburnt and very grateful. Tonight she flew she ups to the highest nest to watch the sunset, and she has stopped pretending it was for the view.
